Browser extensions can be useful. Yet, there are programs that take advantage of our needs and cause harm. One such parasite is the Search Bay Extension. This utility is categorized as PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Yet, there is nothing potential in the nature of this app. It is definitely malicious. This tool is programmed to generate ad revenue for its owners. It uses misleading and aggressive marketing strategies to turn you from a visitor into a customer. Upon infiltration, the extension takes control of your web browser. It replaces your default search engine and starts to control what search results you are exposed to. The app injects fake entries among the search results. It doesn’t matter which engine you use, the Search Bay Extension can modify the displayed results. The fake entries are third-party advertisements, yet, they are not marked as such. Dodgy pages pay hefty sums for their links to be displayed at the top. You can never be sure which search results are organic and which are promoted. But wait, there is more. The obscured search ads are far not the only commercials the PUP forces on you. The Search Bay Extension injects banners, hyperlinks, and in-text ads on every website you open. It can also redirect your browser to third-party pages and even pause your online videos. You will hate the experience. Soon you will notice that your PC underperforms. This again is due to the PUP lurking in the shadows. The furtive app does not limit its resource usage. It consumes an enormous amount of RAM. The more ads you see, the more RAM is consumed, and hence, the slower your PC is. The Search Bay Extension can cause both your browser and OS to freeze and crash. This, of course, leads to data loss and a lot of frustration. Luckily, there is a silver lining. The Search Bay Extension is removable. We have attached a manual removal guide below this article. If you prefer automated solutions, you can also download a trustworthy anti-malware app.
How did I get infected with Search Bay?
The Search Bay Extension used to have an official website and official download from the Chrome Web Store. Yet, this is no longer the case. The app disappeared from the Web. However, it continues to infect PC users. But how is this even possible? Well, easy enough. The Search Bay Extension uses alternative distribution techniques. We are talking about torrents, freeware/shareware bundling, and malvertising. Do you remember getting redirected to an odd website? There, a pop-up message read “add […] extension to leave” or “some changes will not be saved if you close this window”? This is quite a popular scheme. The websites are corrupted. They contain malicious code which prevents the visitor from leaving. You cannot simply close the tab so many users install the offered apps. Do not do it! Don’t interact with this page at all. Use your Task Manager to close your web browser and then start a new session. This is the only safe way to exit these pages. Their messages are very likely to be corrupted. You think you click “Close,” yet, you actually approved the installation of some app. The key to a secure and infection-free computer is caution. If you are not sure how to proceed, always ask for help or at least research the problem online. Learn your lessons, don’t let programs like the Search Bay Extension on board ever again!
