How did I get infected with?
DarkHydrus Trojan relies on trickery to infect your computer. Early versions of the Trojan were spread through a massive spam email campaign. Security researchers report that new variants of the virus also exploit Google Drive. The scheme, however, is identical. The threat publishers camouflage their corrupted files as legitimate documents. They use deceptive language to lure you into interacting with the files. Once you open the document (usually Excel files), a message pops up. Your file editor asks whether you approve the use of data connections. If you click on the “Enable” button, malicious macros start and download the payload file of the virus. At this point, another dialog window opens. It asks permission to start another app that can load the downloaded data. If you give into naivety and give your approval, the virus installs. DarkHydrus Trojan preys on your naivety. This virus succeeds when you let your guard down. Do not make its job easier. No anti-virus app can protect you if you act carelessly. Only your vigilance is powerful enough to prevent infections. Choose caution over carelessness. One keeps the parasites away, the other – invites them in. Even a little extra attention can spare you many future headaches. Treat all unexpected messages as potential threats. Always take a minute to verify the senders. If, for example, you receive an email from an organization, go to their official website. Compare the email addresses listed there to the suspicious one. If they don’t match, delete the pretender. Do this for all types of messages. Whether they are instant messages or online comments, don’t follow links shared by unverified senders.
