How did I get infected with Former Setup?
Former Setup sneaks into your computer undetected and throws you into a whirlwind of ads. Its sudden appearance and aggressive interference often lead the victims to the wrong conclusion that they are dealing with a virus. That’s not the case! Former Setup is not a virus but a simple app which follows standard installation procedures. The PUP needs you, the user, to approve its access. Without your “Yes,” it can’t proceed. The rule, however, has a catch. Having to ask is not the same as having to do so outright! The PUP hides in the fine print and preys on your naivety. It lurks behind bundles, fake updates, and corrupted links. The parasite infects your computer when you throw caution to the wind. The good news is that your vigilance is powerful enough to prevent this type of cyber infection. All you have to do is to be diligent. Don’t ever take your guard down. Don’t follow questionable links. Avoid visiting dodgy websites. And download software from reliable (preferably official) sources only. You should, of course, also pay close attention to the installation processes. Forget about the “Next-Next-Finish” setup strategy. If available, use the advanced/custom option. Deselect the unwanted bonus software, and go through the terms and conditions. If you can’t read the whole document, scan it with an online EULA analyzer. Even a little extra attention can spare you an avalanche of problems. Don’t hesitate to opt out of the installation if you notice anything suspicious!
